Stephanie Adams was born on July 24, 1970, in Orange, New Jersey, USA. She was raised by her aunts, Joyce and Pearl, who were models and encouraged her interest in modeling from a young age. At 16, she began her modeling career, highlighting her African-American, European-American, and Cherokee ancestry and claiming to be a direct descendant of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
Adams graduated from the Ophelia DeVore School of Charm and worked as a model, participating in photo shoots for magazines such as Seventeen, as well as in commercials for brands such as Clairol. Her career took off when she was named Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Month in November 1992, which led her to sign with Wilhelmina Models. She later joined Elite Model Management after becoming engaged to its CEO, John Casablancas.
In 1992, she earned a bachelor's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. In addition to her modeling work, she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2003, commemorating Playboy's 50th anniversary. In 2005, she graced the cover of The Village Voice, further cementing her presence in the entertainment world.
In 1999, she founded Goddessy, a project that combined her interests in spirituality and self-help. She published her first book in 2003 and established her own publishing company in 2007. Following the death of her aunt from breast cancer, she devoted more time to writing, producing nearly two dozen books on metaphysical topics, as well as astrological calendars and a tarot card game under the Goddessy brand. She also wrote a 2004 novel, Empress, set in ancient Rome.
Adams was the founder and CEO of Goddessy Organics, a skincare company. With her husband, she co-owned Wall Street Chiropractic and Wellness.
Throughout her personal life, Adams was briefly married to an Italian investment banker before divorcing. In 2003, she came out as a lesbian in an interview, becoming the first Playmate to do so, and was recognized by The Village Voice as the "greatest lesbian sex symbol." However, in 2009, she announced her engagement to a man and described herself as heterosexual. She married Charles V. Nicholai, a Manhattan chiropractor, in 2010 and announced her retirement from public life to focus on her family.
In May 2018, Stephanie Adams and her seven-year-old son, Vincent, were found dead in a tragic murder-suicide at the Gotham Hotel in Manhattan. According to authorities, Adams had been involved in a custody battle over her son and, hours before the incident, had expressed concerns about the restrictions imposed by her husband and her lawyer. The New York Medical Examiner's Office ruled Adams's death a suicide and her son's a homicide.
