Maria Tortuga was born on September 14, 1949, in Washington State, to a loving family with three siblings. From a young age, she showed a keen interest in the arts and creativity, which led her to graduate from high school and later move to California to pursue her passion for conceptual art. In Los Angeles, she studied with renowned feminist artist Judy Chicago at the Woman's Building, a non-profit arts and education center. In the 1970s, she earned an MFA and began working as a lead designer in local carpet factories.
Throughout her career, Maria decided to explore the world of adult film. She began her career in the industry in the late 1970s, appearing in small productions and quickly rising to more prominent films. Between 1978 and 1987, Maria appeared in nearly 50 adult films, working with prominent actors such as Colleen Brennan, Lisa De Leeuw, Mai Lin, Tiffany Clark, Herschel Savage, and Paul Thomas. Although she didn't achieve the fame of some of her contemporaries, her screen presence and sexual energy left a lasting impression on those who worked with her.
Maria also excelled as a model in men's magazines and developed a particular interest in bondage imagery. Despite her success in film, her true passion lay in dance. Influenced by her mother, who was a member of the first Mexican folkloric dance company in the United States, Maria began studying flamenco and Spanish dance under the tutelage of renowned performer Roberto Amaral in the late 1970s. She participated in the inaugural season of the Los Angeles Opera and was a flamenco soloist with the Layalina Folkloric Ensemble.
In 1987, Maria left the adult film industry and moved to Chicago to dedicate herself fully to dance, adopting the name Maria Gitana. There, she joined the Spanish Dance Society and had the opportunity to travel to Europe to study with the Ballet Mistress of the Spanish National Ballet. In 1992, she received a scholarship to study Escuela Bolera, a classical form of Spanish dance, and became a Dance Master with the Spanish Dance Society, founding the flamenco dance company Manteca Colora.
For several years, Maria maintained her career in Chicago, but in 1998, she decided to return to her home state of Washington to be closer to her parents. In 2004, she founded another dance company, Flamenco Gitana, and taught dance and Pilates in various schools and community centers. Since 2010, she has received several youth arts awards from the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, using the grants to establish cultural flamenco dance programs in local youth centers. She was also responsible for choreographing local theater productions, such as "The Gondoliers" for the Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society.
Maria Tortuga passed away on November 3, 2014, at the age of 65, due to cancer. Her family wrote in her obituary that "the most beautiful and rare flower had bloomed and withered too soon." Despite her time in the adult film industry, her legacy lives on through her contributions to dance and culture.
