Aja, born as Barbara Lynn Tanguay-Emert on June 14 (though other sources indicate July 14, 1963) in Westbrook, Maine, was an exotic dancer, adult film actress, and director, sometimes credited as Lucia Luciano. In addition to her work in front of the camera, Aja also worked as a director of pornographic films and as a fitness trainer. Her life began as an "army brat," as she grew up traveling from Portland, Maine, to Germany, before settling in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, due to her father's military background.

Her career in entertainment began as an exotic dancer, influenced by a friend who was a college student with excellent grades. Aja entered the adult film industry after convincing her then-husband, John Derringer, to move to California. Her stage name comes from a Steely Dan album titled Aja, whose pronunciation is similar to "Asia" with a soft "J." Sharon Mitchell was her mentor during this stage of her life, though through her, Aja also developed a heroin addiction, for which she received help in 1992 through a methadone maintenance program.

Aja's career in adult film began in 1988 with the movie Wild in the Woods, which featured Scott Irish and Randy West. During this period, her then-husband performed all of her anal sex scenes; however, after her divorce, Aja decided not to participate in any more scenes of that type. She appeared in approximately 300 films, standing out in titles such as Mad Love (1989), Ghostess with the Mostess (1988), and Stairway to Paradise (1990). In 1989, she won the Best New Starlet award at the AVN Awards and Star of the Year at the XRCO Awards. In 1992, she took a break from the adult film industry, using her acquired fame to boost her career as an exotic dancer. From then on, she worked intermittently in adult films, both in front of and behind the camera, including scenes with transsexuals, which was uncommon at the time.

In 1997, Aja founded her own pornographic production company, Golden Orchid Productions, after growing tired of her career as a traveling dancer. In 2000, she became the owner and producer of Pleasure Dome Productions, an adult video production company, after its acquisition by Golden Orchid. Aja was also a follower of the Ásatrú religion and the mother of two children (Donald and Elizabeth Cunningham) from her marriage to John Derringer. She formally retired in 1992 to recover from her addiction and focus on dancing, although in 2003 she moved to Mexico and worked as a fitness trainer. She passed away on September 18, 2006, in Mexico at the age of 43, under circumstances pointing to suicide by intoxication. Her legacy was recognized with her induction into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2005.
